I also did a little research on the grease. It meets MIL-G-81322 which is a common product in the aviation world. Aeroshell grease 22 is equivalent, and reasonably easy to obtain around here. The grease zerk on the side "C". I'd remove the zerk, stick a Q-tip in to find out what's there. Chances are, it's never been greased or is full of gun grease. Pulled the gib on the knee and was able to wipe the balance of the grease out of it, plus 15 pounds of chips that were grease glued to the knee insides. A dirty weekend job, but what a difference when you're done. +1 on the push 'n lube as long as the mill is for hobby (or infrequent) purposes. John

For somewhere in the 3-4,000 RPM range, you should be using a semi-fluid grease. I have no idea why some are worried about water on the upper bearings of a manual mill spindle. I'd be using something like a Mobilith #0 or #1. Get a veterinary syringe and shoot the grease in alongside of the seal. It doesn't take much.
