The jet log will get better gas mileage than a suction nozzle and provide better suction should you keep it floating on the pontoons. The jet inlet position doesn't matter too much on my dredge as I still use the old crashbox style header. This may be different than yours, I'm not sure if you have a crashbox or a jet flare.

Also, I notice you use header boxes as opposed to a jet flare. In this village where I am there is big gold. The jet flare moves the material through the sluice box better. But in the main river, there is much more fine gold than big gold. From my experience, the old style header box seems to catch more fine gold than the jet flare.

The key is the jet like tertiaryjim said. A more efficient jet uses less power and can certainly allow the use of a 4" using less than 5hp. I built a 4" running 10ft of hose using a Honda/keene p90 combo - no air. O/U sluice with jet flare (at the moment) and the whole package is no larger than a Keene 2". (no I'm not dreaming)
