To apply for an open cut mine, the opal miner must make a $250,000 bond. The reason for this is after the area has been mined, it has to be brought back to its original condition, the dirt is brought back and the vegetation is re-planted. This material is not quite as bright as "A" grade opal with less yield…but this is still good cutting material in it's own right. Approximately 6-10 pieces to the ounce. By using a long term stabilizing process some of this opal can successfully be cut into finished stones and these stones are usually classified as precious opal. Since only a small percentage of this opal can be stabilized for cutting most of the opal mined in Valley (Nevada) is kept and displayed as beautiful specimens only.
